The moon's phases for December's Full Moon are:
🌓 First Quarter: November 28.
🌕 Full Moon: December 4.
🌗 Last Quarter: December 11.
🌑 New Moon: December 20.
In addition to being the final lunation of the year, the Full Cold Moon is the last of three consecutive Supermoons that started back in October. Depending on your location, the Moon will shine brightly between December 3 and December 5.
Interestingly, the December 2025 Supermoon will be one of the highest-rising Full Moons until 2042. The reason for this is due to a phenomenon known as a Major Lunar Standstill, which causes the Moon to reach extreme heights in the sky roughly every 18–19 years.
The peaks of these arcing paths for the Moon and the Sun are when the Solstices for Winter and Summer occur, which mark the shortest and longest days of the year, respectively.
As the month progresses, the Winter Solstice on December 21st, 2025, brings us the official first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest night of the year. After this point, daylight will slowly begin increasing each day.
According to NASA, in the month of December there will be a comet, meteor shower, and conjunction to look out for along with the Cold Supermoon.
This December 2025 look for...
- Conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter — occurs on December 7th, a few days after the Full Cold Supermoon.
Although hundreds of millions of miles apart, these two celestial bodies will appear close together in the sky.
- Geminid meteor shower — peaking the night of Dec 13-14, this meteor shower comes from an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon, originating near the bright star Castor in the constellation Gemini, the Twins.
The highly active Geminid meteor shower display of shooting stars is set to begin the night of the December Full Moon on the 4th and continue through Dec. 17.
Under ideal dark skies in the Northern Hemisphere, it is possible to see up to 120 or more Geminid meteors per hour, even on the night before and after its peak.
- Comet 3I/ATLAS — makes its closest approach to the Earth on December 19th.
Visible with a telescope with an aperture of at least 30 centimeters due to its distance being about 170 million miles away, 3I/ATLAS can be found in the east to northeast sky right under Regulus, a star at the heart of the constellation Leo, the lion. Ideal viewing conditions for this comet will be during the early pre-dawn morning.
Significance & Influences of the 2025 Cold Moon
The Full Cold Moon in Gemini occurs annually during Sagittarius season, beckoning us into expansion through the warmth of our own hearts as the harsher chilly temperatures of winter settle upon us.
Behind the Moon's Name:
The Full Moon in December is commonly known as the Cold Moon, reflecting the long, cold nights that mark winter's onset.
The December Full Moon is also known to Native Tribes across the Americas by the following names...
- Little Spirit Moon, Manidoo giizisoonhs — Anishinaabeg
- Winter Moon, Bibooni-giizis — Anishinaabemowin
The opposition of Gemini & Sagittarius energies through the Moon and Sun urges us to not only allow contradictions to exist but also to embrace paradox rather than trying to solve them.
Due to its heightened lunar ascent, December's Supermoon brings with it a sense of culmination.
Just as the Moon takes a broader vantage point, we, too, can shift our perspective to connect the dots and come full circle with the lessons started by the Trio of Supermoons.
An expansive mind is needed this Sagittarius season, as the Gemini Full Moon shines a cosmic spotlight on needing to ask better questions and being receptive to new information that may reshape our perceptions, beliefs, and narratives.
Several other planetary configurations this month influence the nature of the questions we might want to ask, as well as the information that arises during this lunar cycle, pertinent to our personal expansion.
The first several influences to consider come from the Full Moon in Gemini opposing both Venus and Mars in Sagittarius, as well as Black Moon Lilith, which is conjunct with Venus and the Sun.
The activation of Sagittarius' fiery energy through these oppositions, especially through Mars, will make it hard to hide how we truly feel.
Emotional overwhelm is more likely to spill over at this time, creating unnecessary battles that thrive on our lowered tolerance for frustration, annoyance, confusion, and delays.
In particular, the conjunction between Venus and Black Moon Lilith reminds us of our need for connections and forms of intimacy that invite us to reconnect with our wild nature and embody authenticity in our relationships.
Since this conjunction is in opposition to the Moon, this energy highlights how relationships can quickly become rooted in pleasing others, comfort, and performance when we ignore our truth.
To revitalize how we authentically connect and show intimacy, it must start with ourselves.
Subconsciously, we may find it more comfortable to neglect, shame, hide, or even revel in the "shadowy" aspects of ourselves that are deemed unlovable, unhealthy, or unworthy, rather than holding ourselves accountable to the practice of relational repair.
The Moon illuminates this subconscious desire to remain in our comfort zone and urges us to recognize the ways we have been maintaining an illusion about ourselves—whether we believe we have no shadow or that our shadow is all we are.
Additionally, around the time of the Full Moon the Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Gemini will form exact squares with the Lunar Nodes.
Since January 2025, the Lunar Nodes have been in the signs of Pisces (North Node) and Virgo (South Node), guiding our collective evolutionary direction toward not becoming excessively rigid or detached from the present moment. As such, the configuration of squares represents a cosmic pivot point where old karmic patterns meet new possibilities around surrender and effort.
Specifically, we are at a crossroads where we must burn off any lingering perfectionism and over-analysis so that we can better harmonize logic and intuition as we move forward in our individual and collective journeys.
Another major influence on this month's lunar cycle comes from the Grand Water Trine on December 6th involving Saturn in Pisces, Jupiter in Cancer, and Mercury in Scorpio (the planetary ruler of Gemini). Additionally, the Trine will form a Kite pattern due to Uranus in Taurus opposing Mercury.
With Mercury recently stationing direct in Scorpio on November 29th, we are offered an opportunity to consciously relate to any emotions that arose during its retrograde cycle. This opportunity to deepen our understanding of our emotional and psychological makeup also extends to any feelings arising around the time of this Grand Trine/Kite configuration.
With Jupiter in Cancer and Mercury's opposition with Uranus, be open to information that awakens new insights relevant to healing and therapeutic interactions. The energy of Jupiter brings a sense of resolution, completion, or finality that may ease processing the past and help bring in wealth and abundance in the form of emotional trust and depth with others.
Depending on where you are on the globe, a New Moon in Sagittarius will occur on December 19th or 20th, 2025.
This New Moon in Sagittarius will be conjunct Venus and Mars, and square Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. The theme around this moon phase is learning how to materialize your dreams by building a disciplined reality.
As with any Sagittarius transit, the New Moon will call on us to take the first steps of a new journey while we reckon with what came before, including inherited narratives.
This process will be complex and philosophical, asking us to remain curious and flexible as we examine how the stories we unconsciously tell ourselves shape our path and lives.
Furthermore, the Sagittarius energy available during this time encourages us to zoom out and expand our understanding of what it means to be intimate, as prompted by last month's Full Moon. This lunar cycle's iteration of this lesson on love invites us to learn how to build true intimacy without smothering the primal fire within us or others.
As Winter lulls us into deeper contemplation, may the light of the Full Cold Supermoon revitalize the spark within us that keeps all shades of our being warm. In extending our own shadow warmth, may everyday compassion seep through the cracks of the relationships in our lives that require repair.
Through this act of repair, may we rediscover the many forms of intimacy available to us in this life. As we reattune what intimacy looks like in its infinite possibilities, may the intimate moments of life bring us back to the most beloved relationship of all, the one with ourselves.
With love,
mgmc
